The "Study" Thing

As college students we here this all the time "You need to study!", whether it be from the teacher or our own critical minds, we hear it. But did you ever find it hard to study??
Studying is not as easy as it sounds.

How many of you find it hard to study?
There is always stuff getting in the way, like home life, cleaning, kids, work. Doesn't it just feel like every time you try to put your nose in that book and hit the grind, life comes up and says, "uh no not right now!"
Or you find yourself trying to study and are just flat out distracted.... because let's be honest there are so many other fun things you could be doing besides sitting around with your nose in a textbook.

Well I thought it would be good to post something everyone can use, STUDY SKILLS!

Good studying has a lot to do with preparation! So let's look at 3 easy ways to get prepared:

  1. Organization - Studying is hard when you can't find the notes you wrote last night or the notes from Math are stuffed inside a binder that is labeled English! So your first step is to get organized. Buy some inexpensive binders and organize your note world!
  2. Study Space - Second thing to do, Identify your ideal study environment! I find it hard to study in chaos, so if my house is messy you are less likely to find me studying there. Try nice, quiet places like the Library, School, Outside in a park, or my personal favorite Barnes and Noble!
  3. GOALS - Lastly set goals for yourself. Do you want to study an hour, or do you want to make it to chapter 5.
Another excellent study practice, is figuring out how to take it all in! Sometimes as students we feel completely overloaded with the information presented to us in class and we wonder how on earth we will ever remember every little thing the teacher talked about. Here are some tips for remembering the Info:

  • Listen carefully
  • Pay attention to your time - time management is huge for studying
  • DO NOT PROCRASTINATE!
  • Research and take good notes
  • Manage your stress level
  • Try some visual organization like mapping and study guides
  • Also work on improving your memory by reviewing, taking flash cards, being quizzed by friends.
Some things to remember, study usually is followed by the dreaded test. So I wanted to give you some tips for Test Anxiety, which in turn can help you relax while studying:
  • Prepare, Prepare, PREPARE
  • Have a positive attitude
  • Organize your notes as well as your thoughts
  • Get comfortable
  • Take a long, deep breath, and try to relax!
There are many ways to improve your study habits and you'll find the best way for your own personal self, but until then, try out these! Remember it's just the "Study" thing!!!

Happy Studying!!!!

Student Self Care!

What comes with being a college student?
Homework, tests, lectures, knowledge.
What can sometimes come with those things?
Stress? Worry? Panic?

As Students sometimes we find it hard to take care of ourselves because we are too busy worrying about everything else like our kids, our school work, our regular work, our lives... we worry about everything. And we forget to take care of ourselves first.
It is important to take care of yourself. Why?
Because you have to be able to handle yourself before you can handle the things school and life throw at you. Your mental health is just as important as your physical health because they can be linked. If you don't take care of yourself mentally then things can manifest physically. These problems can begin to effect your life even more than they already have.
We sometimes forget this because we become so focused on our stress/worry about our classes and the work we have to do that we forget we need to care for us.

There are ways to cope with the stress...
I know what you are thinking... "Oh really! Please tell me!!!"
Well I will.

Here are somethings that work good for self care:

  • Take time for a nap
  • Read a book
  • Exercise (walk, run, stretch, Yoga, Tai Chi, etc)
  • Take time with family (play games, have a movie night, etc)
  • Sketch
  • Listen to music
  • Meditate
  • Write things out
  • Take a bubble bath
  • Go for a swim
  • Enjoy the sun/warmth of outside
  • Hang with friends
  • Garden
  • Journal
  • Go on a vacation
  • Get a massage or mani/pedi
  • Color
  • Take pictures (of anything)
  • Play
  • Laugh
  • Go for a ride/drive
  • Watch the clouds
  • Be creative
  • Dance
There are so many options you can explore. Make your own list of things you like to do! In the Counseling and Human Development Graduate classes we learn about the importance of self care everyday. Being a counselor you deal with many different issues everyday and taking care of yourself is important so you can help those people who come to you for guidance. But remember self care is important for everyone not just graduate students and counselors.

I want to challenge you, create your own self care plan! Set aside time in your day where you do things listed in your self care plan.
Write the plan down and put in on your fridge or your desk, somewhere you'll see it so you know and remember that it is important to you and your school career to be healthy!!!

Be a healthy BLUE RAIDER!!!!!!!
